Asamoah Gyan took an emotional trip down memory lane on Wednesday as he publicly honoured veteran coach J. E. A. Sarpong during his official unveiling as ambassador for Ghana’s national teams and colts football.

The colourful ceremony, held in Accra, attracted several prominent personalities from both sports and politics as the former Black Stars captain was introduced in his new role aimed at supporting football development across the country.

Among the dignitaries present was coach Sarpong, the man widely credited with identifying and nurturing Gyan’s football talent during his early years.

The touching reunion became one of the standout moments of the event as the former striker paused proceedings to acknowledge the veteran tactician’s influence on his journey to stardom.

Sarpong first worked with Gyan during his days at Accra Academy, where the experienced coach helped refine the raw abilities of the youngster who would later become Ghana’s all-time leading scorer.

In appreciation, Gyan presented a special jersey to his former mentor before the two shared warm conversations and reflected on their memories from the early stages of the ex-forward’s career.

The moment drew applause from guests at the ceremony, with many praising the respect shown by the former Ghana national football team captain toward one of Ghana football’s most respected development coaches.

Gyan, who scored 51 goals for Ghana and represented the nation at three FIFA World Cups, was officially unveiled as ambassador for the national teams and colts football earlier in the evening. His new role is expected to involve youth football advocacy, fan engagement activities and promotional campaigns for Ghana football.
