Queiroz Targets Knockout Stage as Ghana Sets Sights on World Cup Progress
Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has declared that Ghana’s primary objective at the 2026 FIFA World Cup is to advance beyond the group stage, insisting that reaching the knockout rounds is the minimum target for his team.
The Portuguese tactician made his ambitions clear after overseeing a 1-1 draw against Wales in Cardiff, a preparatory fixture that served as his first match in charge since succeeding Otto Addo in April.
Despite a disrupted build-up to the tournament, Queiroz remains confident that the Black Stars possess the quality and determination required to progress from Group L.
Ghana showed encouraging signs against Wales, particularly in the second half when Caleb Yirenkyi scored his first senior international goal to put the visitors ahead.
The midfielder capitalised on a rebound after a dangerous attacking move, giving the Black Stars a deserved lead following a resilient performance that had seen them withstand sustained pressure from the hosts during the opening period.
However, Ghana’s hopes of ending their World Cup preparations with a victory were dashed late on when Wales equalised through Lewis Koumas. The forward headed home from a Neco Williams cross to ensure the match ended level.
While the result denied Queiroz a winning start, the coach remained focused on the bigger picture and the challenges awaiting his side in North America.
Speaking after the game, he outlined the standard he expects the Black Stars to meet at the tournament.
“We have to qualify for the second round and that is the main goal of our team…and when we qualify for the second round, the show starts. The real World Cup starts when it is the knockout stage and we want to be there.”
The statement reflects the ambition within the Ghana camp as preparations enter their final phase before the competition begins in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The Black Stars have been drawn in a challenging Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama. To reach the knockout rounds, Ghana will need to navigate a group that features both European pedigree and emerging international opposition.
