Ghanaian football has been plunged into mourning following the tragic death of Dominic Frimpong, who lost his life after an armed robbery attack on Berekum Chelsea.

The horrifying incident occurred as the team was returning from their Ghana Premier League fixture against FC Samartex 1996. Along the Bibiani-Goaso road near Ahyiresu, the team bus was ambushed by armed robbers who reportedly blocked their path before opening fire.

Panic ensued as players and officials scrambled for safety, fleeing into nearby bushes to escape the gunfire. During the chaos, Frimpong was struck in the head and rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The 20-year-old winger had been one of the bright prospects for the club this season, making 13 league appearances and scoring twice in what had been a promising campaign.

In an official statement, the club recounted the terrifying ordeal:

“On our way back to Berekum from Samreboi our team bus was attacked by a group of armed robbers who blocked the road to prevent our passage.

Masked men welding guns and assault rifles started shooting at our bus as the driver tried to reverse. The players and staff fled into near by bushes to take cover.

Unfortunately one of our players is badly injured and is receiving medical attention at a nearby hospital waiting to be transferred to the regional hospital.

We are grateful to the police patrol team for its rapid response, sports journalists who quickly decimated the information, the town of Ashiresu which provided temporary shelter for our players and officials of Bibiani Gold stars who have offered tremendous support.”

The incident has also left several players and officials unaccounted for, as some reportedly fled deeper into the surrounding forest during the attack and are yet to be located.

Frimpong’s death marks a devastating loss for Berekum Chelsea and Ghana football at large, raising serious concerns about the safety of teams traveling for domestic league matches.
