Baba Rahman Calls for Strategic Overhaul in Ghana Premier League Planning
Black Stars defender Baba Rahman has called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to adopt a more strategic and well-structured approach to managing the Ghana Premier League, stressing that better planning could significantly elevate the domestic competition’s standard.
In an interview with Joy Sports, the experienced left-back highlighted the need for deliberate efforts in league development, noting that talent has never been Ghana’s problem — but poor organization and lack of long-term planning continue to hold clubs back, especially in continental competitions.
“The challenges in our league aren’t due to a lack of talent — there are genuinely good players competing. But when it comes to continental competitions, we often fall short,” Rahman said.
Rahman, who rose through the ranks of local club Dreams FC before securing a move to German Bundesliga side Greuther Fürth in 2012, believes the Ghana Premier League has the potential to rival top leagues across Africa if its structural issues are addressed.
“The real problem lies in planning and organization. Improving these areas is crucial to attracting fans and helping our clubs perform better,” he added.
Ghanaian clubs have faced recurring difficulties in CAF interclub competitions, with early exits and inconsistent performances dampening hopes of restoring the country’s past footballing glory.
