Ghana defender Gideon Mensah has sealed a long-term move to Bundesliga outfit FC Köln, completing his switch to the German club ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The 27-year-old joins Köln as a free agent after bringing an end to his four-year spell with French side AJ Auxerre, where he developed into one of the club’s most reliable performers.

FC Köln confirmed the signing on Saturday, welcoming the Black Stars left-back as they continue to strengthen their squad for the new Bundesliga campaign.

Mensah arrives in Germany following an impressive run with Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The left-back played every minute of the Black Stars’ four matches, helping the team reach the Round of 32 before their campaign ended with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia.

His move comes after negotiations over a contract extension with Auxerre failed to produce an agreement, allowing the defender to leave the Ligue 1 club upon the expiration of his deal.

The former Red Bull Salzburg player leaves France after an accomplished stint with Auxerre. He initially joined the club on loan in 2021 before making the move permanent a year later, establishing himself as a key member of the squad.

During the 2025/26 Ligue 1 season, Mensah made 30 league appearances and contributed two assists, playing a vital role as Auxerre secured their top-flight status.

Known for his pace, defensive discipline and ability to contribute in attack, the Ghana international is expected to add quality and experience to Köln’s backline as the club looks to make a strong start to the new season.
