Ghana international Princella Adubea has heaped praise on Black Queens head coach Kim Björkegren, highlighting the Swedish trainer’s impact on the national team’s renewed energy and tactical discipline as they prepare for the upcoming 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The former Apollon Ladies FC striker is one of several experienced players expected to play a crucial role in Ghana’s campaign, and she believes Björkegren’s leadership has brought about a much-needed transformation since his appointment in January 2025.

“It’s been an amazing experience,” Adubea said of working under the Swedish tactician. “He’s very demanding, and I think that helps bring out the best in each player.”

Björkegren, who boasts a strong coaching résumé across Europe and Asia, has focused on raising performance standards, instilling discipline, and introducing modern tactical concepts aimed at reshaping the Black Queens into a more formidable force on the continent.

Adubea, who has had stints in Spain and Israel, said the training environment under the new coach is intense but rewarding.

“Every training session feels like a test, but it also gives us confidence. We know what’s expected, and that makes us more focused,” she explained.

The Black Queens, drawn into a challenging group alongside defending champions South Africa, Mali, and Tanzania, are determined to break their long-standing trophy drought and clinch their first-ever WAFCON title. Ghana’s last appearance in the final was in 2006, where they lost to Nigeria.

Adubea believes that under Björkegren’s technical guidance, the team is better prepared both mentally and physically to compete at the highest level.

“Our coaches are key to everything we do,” she said. “There’s a clear plan, and we trust it. Now it’s up to us to deliver.”

The 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to take place in Morocco from July 5 to July 26, and the Black Queens will hold a final preparatory camp abroad in the coming weeks as they fine-tune their strategy for the tournament.
