University of Education, Winneba Defeat University of Cape Coast to Win Mini GUSA Football Title as UCC Finish Top of Medal Table With 21 Gold Medals
University of Education, Winneba emerged champions of the 9th Mini GUSA Games after edging rivals University of Cape Coast 1-0 in a tightly contested football final at UPSA Park.
The competition, staged from May 5 to May 15, featured 16 tertiary institutions from across Ghana competing in multiple sporting disciplines including football, athletics, volleyball, basketball 3×3, tennis, badminton and table tennis.
This year’s edition was held under the theme, “Integrating University Sports with Academic Professionalism.”
The final between UEW and UCC lived up to expectations, producing an intense battle between two of the tournament’s strongest sides.
UCC began the match brightly and created several promising opportunities during the early stages, but their efforts were repeatedly frustrated by a series of impressive saves from the UEW goalkeeper.
UEW eventually found the breakthrough moments before halftime after being awarded a controversial penalty, which they converted to take a crucial lead into the break.
The second half saw UCC dominate possession and push aggressively in search of an equaliser, but UEW remained organised defensively and successfully protected their advantage until the final whistle.
The victory secured the football title for UEW and sparked jubilant celebrations among players and supporters following the narrow 1-0 triumph.
Although UCC fell short in the final, the university still finished as the overall best-performing institution at the games after topping the medal standings with 21 gold, 18 silver and 11 bronze medals.
Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology finished second on the overall medal table with 15 gold medals.
