Asante Kotoko interim head coach Prince Yaw Owusu has attributed his side’s narrow defeat to Hearts of Oak to a costly goalkeeping lapse, despite praising his players’ overall performance in the Super Clash.

Owusu, who was recently promoted from the assistant role following the club’s decision to part ways with Abdul Karim Zito, took charge of his first major fixture under intense pressure at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium. Kotoko dominated spells of the game but were undone by a moment of misjudgment that proved decisive.

The Porcupine Warriors conceded the only goal of the match in the 15th minute when Baba Adamu headed home from a set-piece, catching goalkeeper Mohamed Camara off his line and leaving the hosts chasing the game for the remainder of the contest.

Reflecting on the outcome, Owusu commended his players for their effort but lamented the error that swung the tie in Hearts’ favour.

“I think the boys did their best. They keep fighting to the end. It’s just the mistake from the goalkeeper that cost us all this,” he said in his post-match assessment.

The interim coach also acknowledged the implications of the defeat on Kotoko’s title ambitions, admitting the setback has made their task significantly harder.

“This defeat makes our title ambition very difficult. Now we need to fight very hard before we can get the title,” Owusu added.

The loss has seen Kotoko slip to fifth on the Ghana Premier League table with 35 points, leaving them nine points adrift of leaders Medeama SC and facing an uphill battle to stay in the championship race.
