Hearts of Oak produced a resilient display to secure a hard-fought victory over arch-rivals Asante Kotoko at the Baba Yara Stadium, despite playing most of the contest with a numerical disadvantage.

The Phobians struck early in the first half through left-back Baba Adamu, who powered home a header in the 14th minute after meeting a perfectly delivered free kick from Martin Karikari. The goal proved decisive in a tense Super Clash that lived up to its billing.

Hearts’ task was made even more difficult when right-back Emmanuel Amankwah was sent off before the break, forcing the visitors to defend with ten men for the remainder of the encounter. Kotoko pressed relentlessly in search of an equaliser, but they were met by a disciplined defensive unit and an inspired performance from goalkeeper Benjamin Asare.

The Black Stars shot-stopper produced a string of crucial saves to deny the Porcupine Warriors, earning the Man of the Match award for his commanding display between the posts.

The victory not only handed Hearts of Oak bragging rights in the final meeting between the two rivals this season but also brought an end to Kotoko’s unbeaten home run in the league. It also served as sweet revenge for the Phobians, who had been eager to make a statement in Kumasi.

Hearts’ triumph keeps them firmly in the title race, as they climb to second place on the table and close the gap on leaders Medeama to five points. With the season reaching its decisive phase, the Phobians remain very much in contention for the Ghana Premier League crown.
