Bankroller of Ghana Premier League leaders Nations FC, Dr. Kwame Kyei, has spoken out strongly against the violence that disrupted his club’s crucial Week 33 clash with Basake Holy Stars on Sunday, declaring that no title is worth the cost of human life.

The top-of-the-table encounter, held at the Ampain AAK II Arena, descended into chaos as supporters of the home side allegedly attacked Dr. Kyei and club president Mr. Divine Kyei Boadu.

The Nations FC delegation cited severe security breaches and biased officiating after two contentious penalties were awarded to the hosts, leading to the abrupt abandonment of the match.

In an interview with Asempa FM, Dr. Kyei condemned the incident and emphasized that the safety of human lives should take precedence over sporting success.

“I was not happy with what happened,” he said. “I have followed football for long but yesterday’s incident was not good. To win the league at the cost of losing lives, then I prefer to lose it.”

Nations FC had gone into the fixture needing a win to seal their first-ever Ghana Premier League title. However, the events on the day overshadowed the football, sparking national concern over the growing trend of violence in local football.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has yet to issue an official response to the incident or outline any disciplinary actions regarding the abandonment of the match.

With just one game remaining in the 2024/25 season, Nations FC’s title hopes now hang in the balance, pending investigations and the outcome of the disrupted fixture. The incident has renewed calls for urgent reforms in matchday security and officiating standards to safeguard the integrity of the sport and the safety of its stakeholders.
