Black Stars Technical Advisor Schaefer Vows to Monitor Ghana Premier League to Boost Local Talent
Black Stars technical advisor Winfried Schaefer has reaffirmed his commitment to paying closer attention to the Ghana Premier League, stressing that monitoring the domestic competition is key to motivating clubs and opening pathways for local players.
Speaking to the Ghana Football Association’s official website, Schaefer underlined his belief that homegrown players deserve equal chances to compete for national recognition.
“We have many top players playing in Europe, but our goalkeeper is a local and was fantastic on Monday. I want to visit the clubs and use him as a role model. All players have a chance to play for the Black Stars team,” he said.
He added that his presence at league venues will not only help him spot promising players but also provide inspiration across the competition.
“It’s great motivation for everyone. I’ll be watching the games too. Most African players who play in Europe come from Ghana, and we must be the heart of African football again,” Schaefer emphasized.
The Ghana Premier League enters its first full round of fixtures this weekend, with matches scheduled for Saturday, September 13, and Sunday, September 14.
Appointed as Technical Advisor of the Black Stars in January, Schaefer’s responsibilities extend beyond the senior team. His role includes offering strategic guidance, supporting football development, and working closely with the GFA Technical Directorate on long-term plans aimed at restoring Ghana’s football to continental prominence.
