Derrick Kohn Still Awaiting FIFA Clearance Ahead of Mali Clash
Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has revealed that debutant Derrick Kohn is yet to receive FIFA clearance to feature in Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday, September 8.
Kohn, who was born in Germany, earned his maiden call-up for Ghana’s September doubleheader against Chad and Mali. However, he missed Thursday’s 1-1 draw in N’Djamena as his paperwork had not been finalised in time.
Speaking to reporters at his pre-match press conference, Addo admitted the situation had been frustrating.
“So, yeah, we had a lot of difficulties in Chad. One was also Derek. We didn’t get the FIFA approval. To that point, we were hoping that we got it, and up to now, we didn’t get it. I’m hoping that it will come tomorrow morning. This is the status quo,” Addo explained.
The Ghana coach also reiterated that his selection criteria remain centred on ability, regardless of where players are based or developed.
“In general, we are always open for any kind of players who are from Ghanaian descent. I always say it’s not about local players; it’s not about players from outside, or who are born in the diaspora. It’s about quality, and we are looking for all kinds of players. At the end, I have to choose,” he added.
Kohn, 26, recently joined Bundesliga side Union Berlin from Galatasaray after a standout season in Turkey. Viewed as a long-term solution for the Black Stars’ left-back role, his clearance will determine whether he makes his international debut against Mali.
Ghana, who top Group I with 16 points, will be aiming to strengthen their bid for a fifth World Cup appearance when they face The Eagles under the floodlights at the Accra Sports Stadium.
