Black Stars forward Brandon Thomas-Asante has admitted he would prefer to start every match but insists he is always ready to make a difference whenever called upon.

The Coventry City striker played a decisive role in Ghana’s dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening Group L match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, coming off the bench to provide the assist for Caleb Yirenkyi’s stoppage-time winner.

With the game heading towards a goalless draw, Thomas-Asante sparked a rapid counterattack before delivering a perfectly weighted pass that allowed Yirenkyi to score and secure all three points for the Black Stars.

Reflecting on his contribution, the 27-year-old said helping the team win was the most important outcome, although he would have welcomed a goal of his own.

“I just wanted to do what I did really. I would have probably liked a goal as well but the main thing was the win.”

Thomas-Asante acknowledged that every player wants to be in the starting lineup but stressed that football often requires patience and readiness from those on the bench.

“My style of play I’m very fortunate that a lot of times in my career even if I’m on the bench there’s an opportunity to come and impact the game. Obviously I want to start every game but in my career you know that is not how football works.”

“You have to be ready for any occasion, and today my job was to try and impact it from the bench, and I’m happy that I could contribute in some way.”

The forward also praised his teammates for their collective effort throughout the match, noting that the foundations for victory had already been laid before his introduction.

“It’s about the team performance because to go to that point at 0-0, defending solidly, having a few chances, that is what the team did before I came on, so credit to them and to Caleb for the goal.”

Thomas-Asante’s energetic display has strengthened his case for a starting role as Ghana prepare for a crucial Group L showdown against England. Head coach Carlos Queiroz now faces an important selection decision after the striker’s game-changing contribution in Toronto.

The Black Stars will head into their next fixture with renewed confidence following their first victory in seven matches and a winning start to their World Cup campaign.
