Black Bombers Jet Off to Ireland for Final Commonwealth Games Preparations
Ghana’s national boxing team, the Black Bombers, have departed for Belfast, Ireland, to continue preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with hopes high of returning home with a strong medal haul.
The three-week training camp forms the final phase of the team’s build-up to the Games, which will be staged in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2.
This year’s Commonwealth Games will feature more than 3,000 athletes from 74 countries competing across 10 sports in a streamlined competition designed to promote sustainability.
Led by head coach Isaac Asare, the Black Bombers began their preparations with an intensive three-month residential camp in Winneba before travelling to Ireland to sharpen their skills against international opposition.
Ghana’s squad comprises 10 boxers—seven men and three women—all eager to represent the nation with distinction on one of the biggest multi-sport stages.
The President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Richard Akpokavie, believes the team’s extensive preparation has positioned them well for success in Glasgow.
“They have been in camp at Winneba for three months. We are very hopeful that they will do well,” Akpokavie said.
Head coach Isaac Asare shares that confidence and has set ambitious targets for his fighters, insisting the team is determined to challenge for the top honours.
“We will by all means bring medals but we are targeting gold,” Asare declared.
The training camp in Belfast is expected to provide the Black Bombers with valuable international exposure and fine-tune their readiness ahead of the competition.
With weeks of hard work already behind them and one final phase of preparation underway, Ghana’s boxers will be looking to arrive in Glasgow in peak condition as they seek to add another memorable chapter to the country’s proud boxing history at the Commonwealth Games.
