World University Football Tournament: Ghana’s UDS Breaks New Ground as First African University to Reach Quarterfinals
The University for Development Studies (UDS) has carved its name into history, becoming the first African institution to secure a place in the quarterfinals of the Universities World Football Tournament. The Ghanaian side achieved the feat with a commanding 4–1 triumph over Spain’s Ramon Llull University in Dalian, China.
Alhassan Zakaria set the tone early, finding the back of the net in the 14th minute. Ramon Llull managed to equalize just before the interval, briefly unsettling the West Africans. But UDS quickly regained momentum after the restart when Ezideen coolly slotted home to restore their lead.
From there, the Ghanaian team seized control. Zakaria completed his brace in the 74th minute after a clever link-up with Ezideen, before substitute Ibrahim Saani capped the victory four minutes later with a composed finish.
The final whistle sparked jubilant scenes among UDS players, staff, and African students in the stands, who recognized the result as a milestone not only for Ghana but for the entire continent.

Head coach Ibrahim Tanko lauded his players’ spirit and drive:
“This is not just a win for UDS. It’s a win for Ghana, for Africa, and for every young player dreaming of showing their talent on the world stage. The boys have been fantastic, and we’ll approach the next stage with the same determination.”
Having now won both of their opening matches, UDS has confirmed its place in the last eight, emerging as one of the tournament’s surprise contenders. Their final group game will decide their quarterfinal opponents, but regardless of what lies ahead, this landmark achievement will be remembered as a defining chapter in African university football.
