Asante Kotoko have taken a significant step in their efforts to reshape the club’s football structure by appointing former Netherlands international Stanley Menzo as Director of Football.

The Porcupine Warriors confirmed the appointment on Monday, handing the experienced Dutch football figure a key role in overseeing the club’s sporting direction as it seeks to re-establish itself among the leading forces in Ghanaian and African football.

Menzo joins the Kumasi-based club with decades of experience gained across multiple levels of the game, having enjoyed success as a player, coach and football administrator in Europe, Africa and Asia.

At 62, the former goalkeeper is best known for his distinguished spell with Ajax, where he spent ten years and made more than 300 appearances. During his time in Amsterdam, he helped the Dutch giants secure several major trophies, including the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1987 and the UEFA Cup in 1992.

His achievements also extended to the international stage. Menzo represented the Netherlands and was part of the squad that competed at the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy.

Following his retirement from playing, he transitioned into coaching and football management, building an extensive résumé that has taken him across different continents.

His coaching career has included stints with clubs such as Volendam, Cambuur, Lierse, Ajax Cape Town and Beijing Guoan. Menzo has also managed the national teams of Aruba and Suriname, further enhancing his reputation as a football strategist and developer.

In addition, he served as goalkeeping coach of the Netherlands national team under former international teammate Marco van Basten, gaining experience at the highest level of international football.

Kotoko’s decision to appoint Menzo is viewed as part of a broader plan to modernise the club’s football operations and strengthen its technical leadership structure. His responsibilities are expected to include overseeing player recruitment, football development programmes and long-term sporting strategy.

The club hopes his wealth of international experience and understanding of elite football environments will help create a sustainable foundation for future success.

With one of European football’s most respected former goalkeepers now joining the club’s leadership team, Kotoko supporters will be eager to see how Menzo’s expertise influences the next chapter in the history of the Ghanaian giants.
