Ghana defender Jerome Opoku has called on the Black Stars to remain focused and grounded despite earning a commendable draw against England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Black Stars produced a disciplined and determined display to hold the Three Lions to a 0-0 stalemate in their second Group L fixture, frustrating one of the tournament favourites with a resolute defensive performance.

Having already defeated Panama in their opening match, Ghana entered the contest full of confidence and once again demonstrated their resilience against elite opposition.

Despite the growing praise surrounding the team’s performances, Opoku insists the squad will not get carried away by recent results.

“I appreciate the love from the fans. And we’re going to continue to stay grounded,” the defender said after the match.

The centre-back also reflected on the criticism that surrounded the national team before the tournament, revealing that doubts from supporters and pundits have served as motivation within the camp.

“Ghanaians didn’t really think this team was that good, did they? Some people saying this is the worst, honest with you, history,” he said.

“And so, me and the boys were talking about it.”

Opoku admitted that overcoming skepticism has become a familiar theme throughout his football career and believes the current Black Stars squad has embraced a similar mentality.

“Through my life, I’ve been an underdog. So, there’s nothing unusual. You know, that’s my being doubted. It’s been my habit. So, in my habitat. To prove people wrong — I get a buzz from it. And so does the team.”

The defender believes Ghana’s performances at the World Cup are beginning to change perceptions and showcase the quality within the squad.

“Now we’re showing the fans, showing the world what we can do.”

The draw leaves Ghana level on four points with England at the top of Group L and firmly in contention for a place in the knockout stages.

With one group match remaining, Carlos Queiroz’s side will now shift their attention to a crucial showdown against Croatia, knowing another strong performance could secure progression and further strengthen belief in a team that continues to exceed expectations on the world stage.
