Newly appointed head coach of Ghana’s U23 national team, the Black Meteors, Kasim Ocansey Mingle, has outlined his plans to prioritize local players in building a formidable team.

The experienced tactician, who also serves as head coach of Ghana Premier League side Nations FC, was recently named the successor to Maxwell Konadu. Konadu left the role to join South African National First Division side Black Leopards.

In his first public remarks since assuming the position, Mingle emphasized his intention to rely primarily on locally-based players while also remaining open to including a select few foreign-based talents.

“I will start with local players as head coach of the Ghana U23 team. It will be prudent to build a strong local team. The foreign players would have to come and compete for places in the team,” Mingle explained.

“I will focus more on local players but then, if I get one or two foreign players who are good, I will include them. It is not going to be a wholesale foreign players; we have to build it from here,” he added.

Mingle’s approach reflects a commitment to harnessing the wealth of talent within the local league, providing a platform for players to showcase their abilities on the international stage.

The Black Meteors are preparing for future competitions, and Mingle’s emphasis on local talent development is expected to resonate with Ghana’s long-standing focus on nurturing homegrown footballers.
