The U-17 Africa Cup of Nations continues today with a crucial Group D clash as the Black Starlets of Ghana lock horns with Algeria national under-17 football team in Morocco.

With defending champions Senegal national under-17 football team and South Africa national under-17 football team also in the group, both nations understand the importance of securing a positive result in their opening fixture.

Black Starlets Return With Renewed Ambition

The Black Starlets are back on the continental stage after a lengthy absence, marking their eighth appearance at the competition. Ghana sealed qualification after finishing runners-up in the WAFU B qualifying tournament under head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum.

One of Ghana’s standout moments during qualification came with a commanding 2-0 victory over Nigeria national under-17 football team in the semi-finals.

Historically, Ghana remain one of Africa’s most successful youth sides, winning the tournament in 1995 and 1999 while also reaching the finals in 2005 and 2017.

Recent preparations have produced mixed results for the Black Starlets. Ghana secured an emphatic 4-0 victory over Côte d’Ivoire national under-17 football team but also suffered defeats against Côte d’Ivoire and Mali national under-17 football team in friendly encounters.

Key figures expected to lead Ghana’s challenge include David Ofori, Eric Adu Gyamfi, Joseph Narbi and Gavi Robihno.

Algeria Eye Strong Start

Algeria arrive at the tournament hoping to continue their steady rise in youth football. This will be their third appearance at the U-17 AFCON after qualifying through the UNAF competition.

Their strongest showing at the tournament remains a runners-up finish in 2009, while they also reached the quarter-finals during the 2023 edition.

The North Africans earned qualification for the 2026 tournament after defeating Egypt national under-17 football team in the UNAF qualifiers.

Although Algeria have shown signs of defensive discipline in recent matches, their warm-up fixtures have produced inconsistent results, including defeats against Egypt and Morocco.

Players expected to play key roles for Algeria include Mouhammad Valmy and Yacine Abed.

Match Outlook

The contest is expected to be closely fought, with both sides possessing pace, technical quality and strong tactical organisation.

Ghana are likely to depend on their attacking transitions and physical intensity, while Algeria will aim to remain compact and disciplined throughout the encounter.

With Group D widely regarded as one of the toughest groups at the tournament, the outcome of this opening game could play a major role in shaping both teams’ qualification hopes.
