Head coach of the Ghana national under-17 football team, Prosper Narteh Ogum, expects a difficult and closely fought contest when his side opens its U-17 Africa Cup of Nations campaign against Algeria.

The Black Starlets begin their Group D journey against the North African hosts in a fixture widely viewed as one of the standout opening matches of the tournament, with both nations eager to secure an early advantage in a highly competitive group.

Speaking ahead of the encounter, Ogum praised Algeria’s structure and organisation while acknowledging the challenge awaiting his team.

“We are expecting a very competitive and tactical game. Algeria are a good side with strong organisation both defensively and offensively. Opening matches are always difficult because every team wants to start well,” he told CAFOnline.

The Ghana coach also stressed the importance of discipline and composure, insisting his players must stay focused throughout the contest and capitalize on scoring opportunities when they arise.

“We must remain disciplined, focused and clinical when opportunities come. I believe it will be a good contest between two strong teams.”

Ghana head into the tournament aiming to progress from a demanding Group D that also includes defending champions Senegal national under-17 football team and South Africa national under-17 football team.

Beyond continental success, the Black Starlets are also targeting qualification for the upcoming FIFA U-17 World Cup later this year as they seek to re-establish themselves among the world’s top youth football nations.
