Cristiano Ronaldo has boldly stated that the Saudi Pro League is now a better standard of football compared to Ligue 1 in France.

The Portuguese striker, who moved to Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr last year after leaving Manchester United, was speaking at the Globe Soccer Awards ceremony in Dubai.

Ronaldo pointed to the increasing competitiveness of the Saudi league, with clubs like Al Nassr and Al Hilal strengthening their squads with world-class talent such as himself, Neymar and Aleksandar Mitrovic.

He feels the league is progressing rapidly and could be considered amongst the top three divisions globally in the coming years.

“Step by step, we are going to reach that highest level,” Ronaldo asserted.

In a controversial claim, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner said he believes the quality in Saudi Arabia is now higher than France’s Ligue 1.

Ronaldo argued Ligue 1 only has “two or three teams with a good level”, whereas the competition is stronger across the board in Saudi Arabia.
