Head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum has made Ghana’s intentions clear ahead of the 2026 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations, declaring that the Black Starlets are targeting nothing short of lifting the trophy.

Placed in a competitive Group D alongside Algeria, Senegal, and South Africa, Ghana heads into the tournament with a rich pedigree in the competition, having previously tasted success and consistently challenged at the highest level.

In an interview on Asempa FM, Ogum outlined his belief that aiming for the ultimate prize is the surest path to achieving the team’s broader objective—qualification for the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

“We aim to win the trophy. The last time we won the trophy was in 2009, so that is our target. We have to aim at qualifying for the World Cup, so if we aim for the trophy, qualifying for the World Cup will be easy for us,” he said.

The coach stressed that setting high standards will push the team to deliver consistently, particularly during the group stage where early momentum could define their campaign.

“Ten teams will qualify for the World Cup, but if we target the trophy, our qualification will be easy. If our target is to win the ultimate, then our group games must be won.

“For us, we are Ghana, and we are capable of repeating what our predecessors did, but we are also a confident squad,” he added.

The tournament, scheduled to be staged in Morocco from May 13 to June 2, will bring together the continent’s top youth sides, offering a platform for emerging talents to shine.

With confidence high and expectations set, the Black Starlets will be looking to channel their proud history into a strong showing as they chase both continental glory and a return to the global stage.
