Essien Urges Black Stars to Embrace Tournament Uncertainty Ahead of World Cup
Former Ghana international Michael Essien has called on the Black Stars to approach the 2026 FIFA World Cup with confidence and adaptability, stressing that success in tournaments often defies expectations.
Ghana have been handed a demanding Group L assignment, where they will face Panama, England, and Croatia in what promises to be a stern test of their credentials on the global stage.
Despite the daunting nature of the group, Essien believes the team must focus on their own performances rather than the strength of their opponents.
“That’s a tough group. But there are always tough games to play, and it’s up to you to win them,” the 2012 Champions League winner said.
Drawing from his own World Cup experience, Essien emphasized the unpredictable nature of tournament football, urging the players to take a game-by-game approach.
“They should take every game as it comes and do their best. It’s a tournament – anything can happen. You just have to make sure you win your games and keep moving. Let’s see what they can do.”
Having represented Ghana at both the 2006 and 2014 FIFA World Cups, Essien understands that progress in such competitions is often determined by resilience, composure, and the ability to capitalize on key moments.
The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, before taking on England on June 23 in Boston. Their final group match will be against Croatia on June 27 in Philadelphia.
With a new head coach expected to be unveiled soon, Essien’s message serves as a timely reminder that belief and determination can be decisive factors, even in the face of formidable opposition.
