Former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien believes Ghana have what it takes to defeat England when the two countries meet at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The ex-Black Stars midfielder shared his thoughts in an interview with Sky Sports ahead of the highly anticipated Group L encounter scheduled for June 23.

Essien admitted the clash is one many football fans across the world are eagerly anticipating and expects an entertaining contest between both nations.

“Hot? I don’t know, but I think it’s going to be a great game. A great match that everyone is looking forward to seeing. Hopefully it will be a good one, and the best team should win,” he said before adding with a smile, “I hope Ghana beat them.”

The former Real Madrid and AC Milan star also reacted to England’s final World Cup squad selection, which generated debate after notable names such as Cole Palmer and Harry Maguire were left out.

Despite the omissions, Essien praised the depth and quality available to the English side heading into the tournament.

“On a serious note, I think they have assembled the best players they could to represent the country, so yeah, it’s going to be an exciting one. We just have to sit back and enjoy the show.”

Ghana will begin their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17 before taking on England in their second group fixture. The Black Stars will conclude the group phase against Croatia on June 27.

For Essien, who spent nearly a decade playing in English football and won multiple trophies with Chelsea, the meeting carries extra significance. However, the former midfielder remains hopeful Ghana can rise to the occasion on the global stage.
