Iñaki Williams Played Last 20 Minutes Injured, Medical Scans Confirm — Asante Twum
Ghana Football Association Communications Director Henry Asante Twum has clarified the circumstances surrounding the absence of Iñaki Williams and Brandon Thomas-Asante from the Black Stars camp in Austria.
Both forwards were expected to be part of the squad for the upcoming international friendlies but were ruled out after picking up injuries during their final club appearances before the international break.
Providing insight into the situation, Asante Twum explained that the development came after the squad had already been announced.
“They didn’t come to Austria. Once you make the squad public, you have to hope none of the players pick up injuries in their last matches,” he told TV3.
He revealed that Thomas-Asante sustained his injury while playing for Coventry City, forcing him off midway through the second half of their match against Swansea City.
In contrast, Williams managed to complete Athletic Bilbao’s game against Real Betis but did so under physical strain.
“Doctors at Athletic Bilbao confirmed that Inaki played the last 20 minutes through the pain barrier. We requested proof, and they sent scans showing discomfort in his groin area,” Asante Twum added.
The GFA official further noted that both clubs remained in close contact with Ghana’s medical team, providing the necessary reports for assessment.
Following a thorough review of the medical evidence, the technical team made the decision to excuse both players from national duty to allow them time to recover.
Their absence has prompted adjustments to the squad as Ghana continues preparations for the upcoming fixtures in Europe.
