GFA Keeps Black Stars Coaching Search Open as Queiroz Future Remains Uncertain
Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council member Nana Oduro Sarfo has revealed that the association remains in discussions with other coaches as it assesses its options for the vacant Black Stars coaching position.
The future of Carlos Queiroz remains uncertain despite the Portuguese manager guiding Ghana to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.
Queiroz took charge of the national team in April on a short-term agreement, succeeding Otto Addo. Although there were expectations that his contract would be extended on a longer-term basis, negotiations have reportedly stalled over the coach’s demands.
Oduro Sarfo has now confirmed that the GFA is exploring alternatives as it considers the best direction for the national team.
“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is still in talks with other coaches for the Black Stars job,” Oduro Sarfo told Kumasi-based Ezra Radio.
The development leaves uncertainty over whether Queiroz will remain in charge as Ghana prepares for another important phase of its international schedule.
The Black Stars are expected to return to competitive football in September when their campaign to qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations gets underway.
Ghana has been placed in Group C alongside West African neighbours Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia and Somalia.
The upcoming AFCON qualifying campaign will be particularly important for the Black Stars after Ghana suffered the disappointment of missing out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The GFA will therefore be under pressure to make the right decision regarding the next head coach, with the new manager expected to guide Ghana towards a return to the continental tournament while building on the team’s World Cup experience.
Whether Queiroz continues or a new coach takes charge, the priority for Ghana will be to secure AFCON qualification and maintain the Black Stars’ progress on the international stage.
