Kim Lars Björkegren Blames VAR Decisions for Black Queens’ WAFCON Exit
Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has expressed his frustration with the officiating following Ghana’s 2-1 quarter-final defeat to Malawi at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Ghana’s hopes of progressing to the semi-finals were ended by Malawi in a closely contested encounter, with the Black Queens unable to secure a place in the last four.
Björkegren believes several VAR decisions went against his side during the match and questioned why Ghana appeared to lack support when crucial calls were being reviewed.
“We had five VAR decisions go against us, and no one with us,” Björkegren said.
The Swedish coach’s comments underline his frustration with the officiating, particularly the number of decisions he believes went against Ghana during a match that ultimately ended their campaign.
Despite the disappointment, the Black Queens had managed to reach the quarter-finals after progressing from the group stage, but their tournament came to an end against Malawi.
Björkegren will now turn his attention to assessing the campaign and preparing the team for future competitions, while his concerns over the VAR decisions are likely to generate further discussion about officiating standards at the tournament.
