George Afriyie: “I don’t need to be President of GFA if our football is run well”

Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association, George Afriyie, has officially picked his form to contest for the 2023 GFA elections. On Friday, August 11 2023 he filed his nomination to challenge Kurt Okraku for the presidential seat.

The astute administrator and previously a key member of the Association did filed his nomination at the GFA Secretariat hours after Okraku had finished his.

The President and bankroller of lower-tier club Planners Athletic Club(Susubiribi SC) who is now keen to reclaim the prestigious position of GFA leadership role spoke after doing the needful on the deadline date.

George is of the full conviction that, Ghana football is not in safe hands, and provided people who spend their daily lives and money on football are satisfied with how football is run, he wouldn’t need to be the Association President.

But insist, filing nomination is the first step to rescue Ghana Football from collapsing. “Well, this is just the first step. A first step to rescue our football.

“If the clubs are satisfied with our football then, I don’t need to contest” If the sporting public, if Ghanaians, if football club owners, people who spent their daily life and money to run football, if they’re satisfied with the position of our football currently, then me George Afriyie I don’t need to be the President of the GFA”

“The truth is that, for the past 4-years our football is divided, the truth is that our football is declined. For the first time in the history of our country, Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko opened free gate, yet it was empty”, He said.

“If Ghanaians think, the performance of our national team in recent times is an improvement of four-years ago, then I don’t need to contest. If Ghanaians are satisfied with our leagues then I, George Afriyie don’t need to contest.

“If there is transpiracy in the administration of football, I don’t need to contest.

“You’re being made to believe that COVID strike is the problem of their failures, now football people have turned to political politicians. If you’re a football person you and I, will agree that the budget for a year for Premier division, division one league and others is a minimum of UDS 100 but do we see it affecting the leagues”? George quizzed.

The former WAFU Zone B President and Black Stars management committee chairman, having lost out on the seat to Kurt E.S Okraku four years ago, will be looking to unseat Okraku during this year’s election.

Elections has been scheduled for September 27 in Tamale.

Currently, George Afriyie and Kurt Okraku are the only two to officially confirm their intentions to run for the presidential seat of the GFA.
