Paul Pogba’s brother is in police custody with four others as part of an investigation into an alleged plot to extort the former Manchester United star.

Mathias Pogba went to see Paris police on Wednesday afternoon and was held for questioning, an official close to the investigation said.

The prosecutor opened a case last month into allegations that Pogba’s brother and childhood friends were demanding €13m from the player.

Mathias Pogba, 32, has denied the claims and his lawyer said last week he wants “more than anything else” to ease the situation with his brother.

The case came to light after he released a video saying he would reveal “great revelations” that would make fans and teammates look at his famous brother in a different light.

He also promised to reveal “very important things” about the Paris Saint-Germain player Kylian Mbappe, as well as questions of “integrity” regarding Pogba’s agent, Rafaela Pimenta.

Paul Pogba’s lawyers said the video was “not a surprise” and that it followed “threats and attempts of extortion by an organised gang”.

Pogba, 29, now plays for Juventus after a disappointing spell at Manchester United.

His brother has played in some of European football’s lower leagues, appearing for the likes of Crawley Town and Partick Thistle.
