Former Ghana national table tennis champion Felix Lartey has urged the government to broaden its investment strategy in sports, calling on the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to prioritise disciplines beyond football.

Lartey believes Ghana possesses immense sporting talent across multiple disciplines and argued that sustained funding, sponsorship and development programmes are needed to unlock the country’s full potential on the international stage.

The former table tennis star stressed that football should not be the sole focus of government support, insisting that athletes in other sports deserve the same opportunities to excel.

“The Sports Minister must look beyond football. Every sporting discipline deserves investment, sponsorship and development,” Lartey said.

According to him, a more balanced approach to sports development would create an environment where athletes from different disciplines can thrive and consistently compete for honours on the global stage.

Lartey emphasised that equal support would not only improve performance but also inspire more young people to pursue careers in a wider range of sports.

“When we support all sports equally, Ghana will produce champions across every discipline,” he added.

His comments come at a time when Ghanaian athletes are representing the country in several sporting disciplines at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with competitors in athletics, boxing, swimming, para sports and table tennis striving for international success.

Over the years, Ghana has produced world-class athletes in sports such as boxing, athletics, table tennis and weightlifting, but many have highlighted inadequate funding and limited infrastructure as major obstacles to sustained progress.

Lartey’s appeal adds to the growing conversation about the need for a comprehensive national sports policy that provides equitable support for all disciplines, with the ultimate aim of strengthening Ghana’s competitiveness on the continental and world stage.
