The Black Starlets will have one final opportunity to qualify for the 2026 FIFA U-17 World Cup after being paired against Uganda national under-17 football team in a decisive playoff match later this month.

The playoff became necessary after Ghana narrowly missed out on automatic qualification from Group D of the 2026 CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The Black Starlets and Algeria finished the group stage level on points, goals scored, goals conceded and goal difference. Their earlier meeting in the competition had also ended in a draw, leaving tournament organisers with no option but to separate the teams through a drawing of lots.

Unlike FIFA competitions, where disciplinary records can serve as an additional tiebreaker, CAF regulations do not include that provision. Algeria eventually emerged as the fortunate side in the draw, progressing to the quarter-finals as group runners-up while Ghana finished third.

Despite the disappointment, Ghana’s hopes of reaching the World Cup remain alive through the playoff route.

The Black Starlets are now set to face Uganda on May 23, 2026, with the winner earning qualification to the tournament in Qatar, scheduled to run from November 19 to December 13.

The Ugandan side is coached by former Ghana international Laryea Kingston, adding extra intrigue to the encounter.

Africa will have 10 representatives at the expanded FIFA U-17 World Cup, and Ghana will be determined to secure a return to the global stage for the first time since 2017.
