Member of Parliament for New Edubease, Hon. Adam Abdul-Salam, has raised concerns over the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Black Stars management committee’s decision to retain Otto Addo as head coach, despite Ghana’s historic failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in 24 years.

The Black Stars failed to qualify for the 2025 African Cup of Nations to be staged in Morocco later this year. However, the GFA later  announced that Otto Addo has been retained as head coach.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s SportsNite show, Abdul-Salam questioned the rationale behind keeping Otto Addo, especially after the Black Stars failed to win a single match in a qualifying group that included Angola, Niger, and Sudan.

“For the first time in 24 years, we have failed to qualify for AFCON and could not even win a match in a group featuring Angola, Niger, and Sudan—teams that are not as strong as Nigeria and Egypt,” he lamented.

The MP further disclosed that even the Minister for Sports and Recreation was surprised by the GFA’s decision to stick with Otto Addo. However, with the decision already made, he urged Ghanaians to rally behind the team.

“We should tone down the negativity and keep hoping for the season,” he advised.

Abdul-Salam also expressed skepticism about the appointment of a new technical advisor, questioning whether his track record was strong enough to make a real impact. However, he concluded by stating that the GFA and Otto Addo now have the responsibility to prove critics wrong by delivering success in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
