Ghana national under-17 football team have suffered a heartbreaking exit from the 2026 CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations after losing a drawing of lots to Algeria in Rabat on Wednesday.

The Black Starlets had kept their qualification hopes alive with an impressive 3-1 victory over South Africa  in their final Group D fixture. However, despite finishing the group stage on four points, Ghana were denied a place in the knockout round under extraordinary circumstances.

Algeria also ended the group with four points after falling 2-1 to Senegal, who secured top spot and automatic progression to the quarter-finals.

At the conclusion of the group matches, Ghana and Algeria could not be separated by any of the standard tiebreakers. Both nations recorded the same number of goals scored, goals conceded and goal difference, while their earlier meeting in the competition had ended in a 2-2 draw.

With every statistical measure exhausted, tournament regulations required the final qualification slot to be determined by drawing of lots.

In the decisive process, Algeria were selected first, handing the North Africans qualification to the quarter-finals as well as a place at the upcoming FIFA U-17 World Cup.

The outcome brought a cruel end to Ghana’s campaign after the Black Starlets fought back strongly in their final group game to revive hopes of progression. Despite the disappointment, the team showed moments of promise throughout the tournament, particularly in attack, but ultimately fell victim to one of football’s rarest qualification methods.
