World Cup: Queiroz reveals what he loves about Ghana, speaks on Djiku injury and tournament expectations
Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has revealed what he loves most about Ghana while also addressing key issues ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking at his first press conference since arriving in Wales with the national team, the Portuguese tactician described Ghana’s football talent and the passion of its supporters as the country’s greatest strengths.
According to Queiroz, the combination of talent and passionate fans creates an “explosive formula for success.”
“The football talent in Ghana is amazing, and the passion the people have for football is incredible. Those two things together can lead to success,” he said.
The former Real Madrid and Portugal coach admitted that he is feeling some pressure due to the high expectations of Ghanaian supporters but added that he has been encouraged by the commitment shown by the players in camp.
Meanwhile, Queiroz confirmed that defender Alexander Djiku will miss the World Cup through injury.
The experienced centre-back has been replaced by Cypriot-based defender Derrick Luckassen of Pafos FC, who featured in the UEFA Champions League this season. Loukasis is expected to partner former Chelsea defender Wallace at the heart of Ghana’s defence.
On Ghana’s ambitions for the tournament, Queiroz avoided setting a specific target such as reaching the quarter-finals or semi-finals.
Instead, he said his biggest objective is for Ghanaians to be proud of the team at the end of the competition.
“I want Ghanaians to feel proud of this team when the World Cup is over,” he stated.
The coach explained that he wants his players to fight for every ball and leave everything on the pitch regardless of the final outcome.
Queiroz also stressed that he should be judged solely on results, insisting that performances on the field will determine whether he has succeeded or failed.
The 73-year-old was also asked about Thomas Partey’s inclusion in the squad despite ongoing legal proceedings in England.
However, Queiroz declined to discuss the matter in detail, saying he preferred to allow the legal process to run its course while he concentrates on football.
The Black Stars will continue their preparations with an international friendly against Wales before departing for the World Cup.
