Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, former Minister of Finance, has refuted claims that the government has abolished the  10% withholding tax on betting and lottery winnings, stating that the tax was never implemented in the first place.

Dr. Forson, while presenting the2025 budget, announced the removal of the 10% betting tax, arguing that the move would ease the financial burden on citizens, increase disposable incomes, and support business growth.

However, Dr. Amin Adam the MP for Karaga reacting to the statement insists that the announcement is misleading since the tax was never enforced under his administration.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we never collected or implemented the betting tax. So to come and tell Ghanaians that you have abolished something we never implemented is to deceive the people of Ghana,” he stated.

The betting tax, introduced in 2023, faced strong opposition from betting companies and the youth, who argued it was unfair and discouraged participation in the gaming industry.

With the current government announcing to have abolished it, the controversy surrounding its actual implementation will spark debate among policymakers and citizens.
