Former Black Stars midfielder Sulley Muntari has delivered a scathing critique of the Ghana Premier League (GPL), describing the division as being in a dire state and lacking proper structure for long-term development.

Muntari, who began his illustrious football career with Liberty Professionals in 2000 and returned to Ghana to play for Hearts of Oak in the 2021/22 season, shared his experiences and concerns about the league during an interview with 3Sports.

Reflecting on his stint with Hearts of Oak, Muntari praised the fans and management but did not hold back on his assessment of the league as a whole.

“I enjoyed it. Hearts fans and the president were amazing. But the league is a big hole where they are dumping money. There is no future for the local league. I am hoping I can get some funds and really help them. It’s a mess. When I was there, it was a mess. Maybe now it is worse. If we don’t help these guys, we won’t get the top players.”

Muntari also highlighted the poor state of sports facilities and infrastructure, lamenting the lack of basic standards such as hygienic changing rooms.

“The changing rooms smell. That respect is not there. I didn’t even want my laundry done. I would take it home. When you get into changing rooms, they smell bad. It is not just one team. Everybody.”
