Zinabu Issah Delivers Ghana’s First Medal at Glasgow 2026 with Shot Put Silver
Ghana has opened its medal account at the 2026 Commonwealth Games thanks to a superb performance from Zinabu Issah, who claimed silver in the Women’s F57 Shot Put event.
Issah produced a season-best throw of 8.65 metres in the final to finish second, becoming the first Ghanaian athlete to reach the podium at this year’s Games in Glasgow.
Her achievement comes as a welcome breakthrough for Team Ghana after several athletes fell short of medal contention during the opening days of competition.
Before Issah’s success, Ghana endured a string of near misses, with athletes including Abigail Abugire in the women’s 800 metres, Deborah Acheampong in the women’s 100 metres, Ebenezer Ankrah in boxing, swimmer Nubia Adjei, and sprinter Isaac Botsio all exiting their respective events without securing a podium finish.
Issah’s silver medal has not only lifted the mood within the Ghana camp but has also provided fresh momentum as the delegation continues its campaign.
Team Ghana could add to its medal tally on Tuesday, July 28, when boxer Amadu Mohammed returns to the ring for his men’s bantamweight quarter-final.
The African Games champion is one victory away from guaranteeing himself at least a bronze medal, with a win securing Ghana’s second podium finish of the Games.
Issah’s outstanding display also underlines the continued rise of Ghana’s para-athletes on the international stage, reinforcing their growing contribution to the nation’s success at major multi-sport events.
