President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Richard Akpokavie, has appealed to government authorities to urgently release financial support for Ghana’s preparations ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Speaking during the GOC Annual General Meeting on Saturday, Akpokavie expressed concern over delays in funding with barely two months remaining before the start of the Games in July.

According to the GOC president, the lack of financial support is affecting preparations for both the Commonwealth Games and the upcoming Youth Olympic Games.

“This year, we are expected to prepare athletes for both the Commonwealth Games and the Youth Olympics, yet we are still awaiting funding,” Akpokavie stated during his address to members.

He revealed that Ghana intends to send a 40-member contingent to Glasgow, a significantly smaller delegation compared to the team that represented the country at the 2022 Games in Birmingham.

Akpokavie acknowledged the economic difficulties facing the country but appealed for the timely release of the approved budget for sports development.

“We understand the broader economic challenges facing all sectors. However, we respectfully appeal for the release of the limited funds approved for sports,” he added.

Ghana is expected to compete in several disciplines at the Games, including athletics, boxing, judo, para-athletics, para-powerlifting, para-swimming and weightlifting.

The Commonwealth Games are scheduled to begin in July 2026, with Ghana aiming to make a strong impression despite the financial challenges surrounding preparations.
