Ghana Concludes Africa Aquatics Zone 2 Championships with 69 Medals

Team Ghana delivered a stellar performance at the 2025 Africa Aquatics Zone 2 Championships, amassing a total of 69 medals as the three-day continental event concluded on Sunday at the Borteyman Sports Complex in Accra.

The host nation’s junior swimmers, comprising a 12-member squad, finished second overall with 43 medals — narrowly behind Senegal, who topped the table with 31 medals, including 11 golds. Ghana’s juniors claimed 10 gold medals, while Nigeria placed third with 32 medals, matching Ghana’s 10 golds but finishing lower on countback.

The Ghanaian junior team included promising swimmers such as Tamba Akin Boamah, Yamin Amankwah Boamah, Michael Crabbe-Mann, Kal-El Ntiamoah, Andre Nimoh, Johnson Gyarko, Kwasi Frimpong, Oduma Aba Agyei, Jada Yankey, Mercedes Abdallah, Yemen Bozuma Cornie, and Lea El Haj.

In the senior category, Ghana emerged as the top-performing nation, sweeping 26 medals — 13 gold, seven silver, and six bronze — ahead of Senegal, who finished second with 36 medals, including 12 golds. Benin claimed third with eight medals.

Team Ghana’s senior contingent featured top talents such as Abeku Jackson, Harry Stacey, Ivan Snowden, Christian Nortey, Ebenezer Osabutey, Titus Ankrah, Joselle Mensah, and Nubia Adjei, with coaches Sam Tosin and Darko Missihoun leading the technical team.

The 2025 Africa Aquatics Zone 2 Championships, held from October 3 to 5, brought together swimmers from 16 countries across West and Central Africa. This year marked the second consecutive edition hosted by Ghana at the state-of-the-art Borteyman Sports Complex, further solidifying the nation’s growing reputation as a key hub for regional aquatics development.

The competition also served as a qualifying event for the 2026 World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m) to be staged in Beijing, offering an invaluable platform for African swimmers to test their readiness on the global stage.
