Richard Akpokavie Elected New President of Ghana Olympic Committee
Richard Akpokavie has been elected as the new president of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), marking a major milestone in his sports administration career.
In Saturday’s elections, Akpokavie secured a convincing victory, garnering 44 votes against his opponent Michael Aggrey, who polled 19 votes.
The win represents a remarkable turnaround for Akpokavie, who narrowly lost the GOC presidency four years ago. In the 2021 elections, he was defeated by Ben Nunoo Mensah by just seven votes.
Akpokavie is no stranger to leadership within the GOC, having previously served as the organisation’s General Secretary from 2017 to 2021. His earlier experience and deep roots in Ghanaian sports administration were seen as major advantages heading into the election.
Before his administrative career, Richard Akpokavie was a notable athlete himself, captaining Ghana’s national hockey team during his playing days.
His election signals a new era for the GOC as it seeks to build on previous achievements and continue promoting Olympic sports development across Ghana.
Akpokavie is expected to outline his vision for the GOC in the coming days, with stakeholders optimistic about a future of unity, growth, and enhanced international representation under his leadership.
