Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has addressed the controversy surrounding Thomas Partey’s inclusion in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that the midfielder remains entitled to the presumption of innocence while legal proceedings continue in England.

Partey, one of Ghana’s most experienced players, was named in Queiroz’s final squad despite currently facing multiple criminal charges. The former Arsenal midfielder has pleaded not guilty to all allegations and continues to deny any wrongdoing.

The decision to include the 33-year-old has generated significant debate, but Queiroz defended the call-up when questioned by journalists following the announcement of his World Cup roster.

“It’s a simple and straightforward answer. As far as I know, in England, Portugal, and everywhere else, the presumption of innocence is afforded to the accused until a court reaches a decision.

“Unfortunately, in today’s society and on social media, people are often judged and condemned before they even have the opportunity to defend themselves.

“Let’s allow the process to take its natural course. One day, when the river meets the ocean, we are going to find the truth.”

Queiroz’s remarks underline his position that legal proceedings should be allowed to run their course before conclusions are drawn regarding the player’s situation.

The Ghana coach has placed considerable faith in Partey’s experience and influence within the national team setup as the Black Stars prepare for the global tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Partey is set to feature at his second FIFA World Cup after representing Ghana at the 2022 edition in Qatar. His selection stands out as one of the most closely scrutinised decisions in Queiroz’s squad announcement, given both his importance on the pitch and the ongoing legal case off it.

As Ghana intensify preparations for the tournament, attention will remain on both the team’s World Cup ambitions and the continued developments surrounding one of its most prominent players.
