Maxwell Konadu Vows to Rebuild Black Satellites After WAFU B Exit
Black Satellites head coach Maxwell Konadu has promised to steer Ghana’s U-20 national team back to the summit of African football following the side’s early exit from the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship.
Ghana’s campaign in Côte d’Ivoire ended at the group stage after the Black Satellites finished with two points from three matches, missing out on a place in the semi-finals. Despite the disappointment, Konadu insists the result will serve as motivation rather than a setback as preparations begin for the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, which Ghana will host.
The former Black Stars assistant coach believes the experience has reinforced the need for improvement and is determined to build a stronger team for the continental showpiece.
“This is not going to demotivate us. Rather, it will encourage us to give our best. We have to move on, reorganise ourselves and come back stronger,” Konadu said.
He also acknowledged the enormous expectations attached to the Black Satellites, one of Africa’s most decorated youth teams and champions of the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
“This team has enjoyed so much success over the years, so any tournament without the trophy is never acceptable to Ghanaians. That is not what we came here for. The Black Satellites have set very high standards over the years, and that is where we want to take the team back to,” he added.
Although Ghana failed to progress in the regional competition, Konadu believes the tournament offered important lessons for both the players and technical staff.
With automatic qualification already secured for the 2027 U-20 AFCON as tournament hosts, the Black Satellites will now shift their attention to rebuilding the squad, refining their tactical approach and ensuring they are ready to compete for continental honours on home soil.
Konadu remains confident that the team can rediscover its winning identity and restore the Black Satellites to their traditional position among Africa’s leading youth football nations.
