Black Satellites Bow Out of WAFU B U-20 Championship After Togo Stalemate
Ghana’s Black Satellites have been eliminated from the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship after playing out a 0-0 draw with Togo in their final Group B fixture at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire.
Entering the match needing all three points to keep their hopes of reaching the semi-finals alive, the Black Satellites produced arguably their most convincing display of the tournament.
Head coach Maxwell Konadu’s men dictated possession for much of the contest, controlled the tempo and fashioned the clearer scoring opportunities, but were unable to convert their dominance into the goal they desperately needed.
Ghana even appeared to have found the breakthrough at one stage, only for the goal to be disallowed, leaving the Black Satellites frustrated as they searched for a winner that never arrived.
The final whistle confirmed Ghana’s exit, with the team finishing third in Group B on two points after three matches.
The Black Satellites began their campaign with a 4-2 loss to Nigeria, before recovering to earn a 1-1 draw against Burkina Faso. Their goalless result against Togo ultimately proved insufficient to extend their stay in the competition.
Although the outcome fell short of expectations, the tournament provided an important platform for player development and squad assessment.
Throughout the competition, Ghana showed resilience, attacking intent and determination against some of the strongest youth teams in the WAFU B region, while several players gained valuable experience at the international level.
For Maxwell Konadu and his technical team, the championship also offered an opportunity to evaluate the squad under competitive conditions as preparations continue for bigger challenges ahead.
With Ghana already assured of a place at the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations as hosts, the WAFU B tournament formed part of the Black Satellites’ long-term preparations, giving the coaching staff valuable insight into the team’s strengths and areas that require improvement before welcoming Africa’s best young talents next year.
