Colombia head coach Néstor Lorenzo believes his side will need more than an impressive performance to overcome Ghana when the two nations meet in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The South Americans face the Black Stars on Saturday with a place in the last 16 at stake after topping Group K with seven points, while Ghana progressed from Group L following a resilient group-stage campaign.

Ahead of the knockout encounter, Lorenzo admitted that Colombia are still uncertain about the tactical approach Ghana will adopt, making preparation for the contest even more challenging.

“I don’t know if Ghana will present a low block. Maybe they want to surprise us or come out and attack with everything,” Lorenzo said during his pre-match interview.

The Colombian coach described the tournament as one of the most competitive in recent memory, insisting that quality alone is no guarantee of success in knockout football.

“The feeling is that the competition is incredibly even and that it is there for anyone to win. Besides playing well, you need that little bit of effectiveness and luck,” he added.

Lorenzo’s comments underline the respect Colombia have for a Ghana side that has impressed with its defensive organisation under head coach Carlos Queiroz.

The Black Stars frustrated England in a goalless draw during the group stage and secured qualification for the knockout rounds with disciplined performances that have made them one of Africa’s standout teams at the tournament.

Saturday’s showdown promises to be one of the most intriguing ties in the Round of 32, with both nations aiming to extend their World Cup journey and secure a coveted place in the last 16.

Kick-off is scheduled for 01:30 GMT on July 4 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.
