Kim Lars Bjorkegren Targets World Cup Return as Black Queens Chase WAFCON Success
Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren has reaffirmed his ambition of guiding Ghana back to the FIFA Women’s World Cup, insisting that restoring the national team to Africa’s elite remains his biggest objective ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The Swedish tactician believes a strong showing at WAFCON will not only mark Ghana’s resurgence but also secure qualification for next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, where Africa will be represented by the tournament’s top four teams.
Ghana’s senior women’s national team has not featured at the Women’s World Cup since the 2007 edition in China, where the Black Queens exited at the group stage.
Bjorkegren says reversing that long absence has been his mission since taking charge of the team.
“When I took over the team one and a half year ago, my expectation is to bring back Ghana to a top four team in Africa,” he told PFAG.
The coach stressed that reaching the semi-finals of WAFCON would represent a major breakthrough for Ghanaian women’s football and provide the platform for future success.
“If we do that, I am pretty sure sooner or later we will win. Top four is going to give us the qualification to the World Cup, that is going to be huge,” he added.
The Black Queens are currently in Morocco putting the finishing touches to their preparations for the continental championship.
