Semenyo Calls for Defensive Discipline Ahead of Croatia Showdown

Ghana forward Antoine Semenyo has stressed that defensive organisation will once again be the foundation of the Black Stars’ approach when they face Croatia in their decisive Group L fixture at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Manchester City attacker believes Ghana’s collective commitment without the ball has been instrumental to the team’s impressive start to the tournament and insists the same mentality will be required to secure a place in the Round of 32.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s showdown at Lincoln Financial Field, Semenyo said every player understands the importance of sticking to Carlos Queiroz’s tactical blueprint.

“Again, this was most important for the team. We have to defend as a team for 90 minutes to get a result. That is what we have to do,” he said.

Semenyo explained that his experience in the Premier League has prepared him to embrace a disciplined, team-first role whenever the situation demands it.

“I have been in a team previously, Bournemouth, where a lot of the time we were defending. I am quite used to it. It is what is needed for the team. That is all.”

The 25-year-old believes the squad has fully embraced Queiroz’s philosophy, crediting the Portuguese coach for building a united group that remains focused on its objectives.

“I think all the players are happy, they’re content with what’s going on right now. We’re not trying to get ahead of ourselves.”

After victories over Panama and a hard-fought draw against England, Ghana sit level on four points at the top of Group L and are within touching distance of the knockout stages.

A win over Croatia would guarantee qualification to the Round of 32, while a draw could also be enough depending on the outcome of England’s match against Panama.

Despite the favourable position, Semenyo says the players are refusing to become complacent as they prepare for one of the biggest games of their World Cup campaign.

“We know that tomorrow is an important game. We want to make sure we solidify that qualification,” he said. “But I think every player is ambitious. Everyone wants to push on, get through to the next round and see what happens.”

He concluded by reiterating the team’s measured approach.

“But again, we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves.”

With qualification in sight, Ghana will look to produce another disciplined display against Croatia as they bid to extend their unbeaten run and continue their impressive World Cup journey under Carlos Queiroz.
