Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren believes Ghana’s women’s national team is entering the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in a much stronger position than it was a year ago, expressing confidence in his squad ahead of the continental tournament in Morocco.

The Black Queens are already in Morocco putting the finishing touches to their preparations for WAFCON 2026, which runs from July 25 to August 16.

After overseeing the team’s recent training sessions, the Swedish tactician said he has been encouraged by the progress made within the squad, pointing to improvements in player fitness, team chemistry and the overall environment around the team.

Bjorkegren also highlighted Ghana’s 1-0 victory over Côte d’Ivoire in a recent international friendly as a positive step in the build-up to the competition.

“We had a good first game against Ivory Coast, which ended 1-0. So we keep building from here,” he said.

The coach explained that changes within the technical team, coupled with the continued development of the players, have significantly strengthened the Black Queens since he took charge.

According to Bjorkegren, the squad is now physically and mentally better equipped to compete against Africa’s top teams.

“We have some new members on the staff. Overall, many of the players are in better shape this year. The team is also in a much better place if I compare with one year ago, so I’m really looking forward to the start of WAFCON,” he told the GFA Media Team.

The Black Queens have been drawn in Group D alongside Cameroon, Cape Verde and Mali, with their opening fixture set to be against Cape Verde.

Ghana will be aiming to improve on its third-place finish at the previous edition while also targeting one of the qualification spots available for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

With the tournament fast approaching, Bjorkegren remains optimistic that the progress made over the past year will be reflected on the pitch as the Black Queens seek to make a strong impression in Morocco.
