J. E. Sarpong Breaks Silence on Shock Eleven Wonders Departure
Veteran coach Josef Emmanuel Sarpong has opened up about the circumstances that led to his abrupt resignation from Eleven Wonders, barely weeks after taking charge of the struggling Premier League side.
Sarpong, a well-known figure in Ghanaian football with stints at Great Olympics and Ebusua Dwarfs, was appointed to succeed Nii Odartey Lamptey as Eleven Wonders attempted to salvage their poor start to the 2025/26 season. But after overseeing three winless games, he opted to walk away — a move that fuelled rumours across the local football landscape.
In an interview with Asempa FM, Sarpong revealed that he discovered deep-seated structural problems at the club almost immediately upon assuming his role.
“I was contacted to help fix the situation, but upon arrival, I realised that so many things were wrong within the club,” he said.
He stressed that his decision was also influenced by concerns about protecting his own legacy, given the team’s precarious position.
“Personally, I did not want a situation where it would be said that I was the one in charge when the team got relegated from the Premier League, so I had to make a decision to leave. Players are not paid well and are not fed well. Sometimes, the players can go three days without eating. They have a poor transportation plan. The players are sometimes forced to use public transport, ‘trotro’, which is not good for the players.”
Sarpong suggested that some of the underlying issues may not have been fully disclosed before he accepted the job.
“Nii Odartey Lamptey was in charge and perhaps could not let these things out, but for me, I will say it. The challenges of the club are down to administrative lapses, and so you cannot entirely blame the players for the current situation,” he added.
Eleven Wonders remain rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table with only three points from 11 matches. They face Dreams FC next in their Matchday 12 encounter, while the club continues its search for a new head coach.
