Former Black Stars forward Kwesi Appiah has admitted that Ghana is still searching for a true replacement for legendary striker Asamoah Gyan, following his retirement from international football.

Gyan, Ghana’s all-time leading goal scorer, left an unparalleled legacy, and Appiah, who played alongside him at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), believes his absence is still being felt.

In an interview with Flashscore, Appiah acknowledged the immense challenge of finding someone who can replicate Gyan’s goal-scoring prowess and leadership.

“It’s a very tough task to replace someone of his calibre and quality. That type of striker and character is not produced that often,” Appiah stated.

The 34-year-old pointed to players like Mohammed Kudus and Antoine Semenyo as exciting prospects, but he stressed that consistency at the international level is key.

“At this moment in time, you have a player like Kudus and potentially Semenyo, who are playing really well for their clubs. We’d hope they can eventually have that type of level and consistency for Ghana to help lead the team to glory as Asamoah Gyan so often did.”

As Ghana prepares for future AFCON and World Cup qualifiers, the search for a new talisman remains a top priority, with hopes that an emerging talent can step up to fill the void left by Gyan.
