Ghana miss out on AFCON after draw with Angola
The Black Stars of Ghana will not be at the next African Cup of Nations in Morocco after a disappointing draw against Angola.
Ghana drew 1-1 with Angola tonight in Luanda; leaving Ghana at the bottom of Group F with just 3 points.
Ghana started the match strongly, taking an early lead in the 19th minute through captain Jordan Ayew. Ayew delivered a stunning free-kick from 40 yards, leaving the Angolan goalkeeper helpless as the ball sailed into the net.
In the 27th minute, Gideon Mensah fouled Zito Luvumbo in the penalty box, gifting Angola a chance to equalize. However, Ghanaian goalkeeper Abdul Manaf Nurudeen stepped up with a crucial save, denying M’Bala Nzola’s spot kick to preserve Ghana’s lead.
Angola eventually broke through in the 63rd minute when substitute Zini Cabaca Salvador headed in a well-placed cross from Joao Felicio Milson. The home side dominated much of the second half, creating several chances, but Nurudeen’s outstanding performance kept Ghana in the game.
Despite their resilience, the Black Stars were unable to reclaim the lead, and the draw confirmed their failure to qualify for the AFCON for the first time since 2004.
Ghana plays Niger on Monday 18th November 2024 at the Accra sports stadium.
